Lady Emma Tregarde

The most horrid things happen in the best families. My deep dark secret? I'm a demon. Well, half. They got my father out of Europe just barely in time, right ahead of the nano-viruses, or so they thought. Actually, he was already infected.

My father, Lord Harold Tregarde, is a shape-changer. My brother Andrew is a shape-changer. And I, Lady Emma Tregarde, am, to my despair, a shape-changer. My mother was absolutely shocked when she discovered the truth, two years after she married my father. If you think it's hard to find good help, try finding a nurse who won't mention your firstborn's habit of changing shape in her crib. Or your secondborn's, for that matter.

Secrecy is, of course, our first priority. No one outside the family knows our little secret. Well, not anymore, anyway. Our nurse died not long after my mother.

My father, brother and I spend all of our time and energy working to ensure that we always appear very, very normal. In an upper-crust sort of way, of course. We visit all the best people. Heavens, we ARE the best people. We maintain a strong social circle, and a stronger circle of informants, a spy network capable of sniffing out the slightest hint that anyone has any suspicions of us. And we never, ever draw attention to ourselves.

I can change my hair colour, or my eyes. I can strengthen my muscles and hone my senses. I can shape myself into a hawk, or a kitten or, I suppose, a whale. But I never do. When I'm feeling very very vain, I sometimes heighten my cheekbones just a touch. Not enough for anyone else to notice, really.
