Mr. Notorio Malavitoso is the head of the Malavitoso family, a clan of Italian-American businessmen of whom there is absolutely no reason to suspect any wrongdoing or shady connections whatsoever. No one who has attempted to publicly accuse them of criminal activity has ever survived long enough had the temerity to testify to these scurrilous allegations in court, so clearly the miscreants responsible for spreading such rumours couldn't have been very serious about them.
The Malavitosos' business interests include many fine and reputable public houses, such as The Shady Arms, The Cloak & Dagger and The Slap & Tickle, plus a generous offer of protection services to those establishments they do not own (the unfortunate fates that tend to befall establishments unwise enough not to purchase these services are clearly proof of just how good they are at protecting their clients); many gaming houses and other entertainment venues; and a number of thoroughly respectable salons offering employment to disadvantaged young ladies and companionship to lonely gentlemen.
The police, courts and politicians tend to wisely turn a blind eye to the (completely unfounded) allegations that the Malavitosos' business empire is rooted in organized crime, possibly because they find that sort of crime to be on the whole better-behaved and easier to manage than the disorganized variety, and appreciate the Malavitosos' (purely public-spirited) tendency to crack down on the latter more efficiently than they do.
Note: anyone who speaks Italian, or takes a moment to look it up in an online English-Italian dictionary, will see that Mr. Malavitoso's name follows in the same fine tradition of subtle and understated naming that resulted in PJ Sketchington's, The Shady Arms and Betsy Killyourface.
